THAT IS A BREEDER USING 61 FOR WHAT PAWPEDS WRITES 68, AND SAYING SO IN WORDS | WHAT IT SETTLES. S_CROSSNAME_196 DEAF, on the breeder's own account. BOTH DAUGHTERS OF THIS CROSS WERE BORN DEAF, ON THE BREEDER'S OWN ACCOUNT, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TWO-LINE CROSS IN THIS REGISTER WHOSE OUTCOME ANYBODY HAS REPORTED. THE CAUSE IS NOT ESTABLISHED AND THE REGISTER DOES NOT CLAIM IT. Deafness in the cat has a common and well-described route through white spotting with a blue eye, and these animals carry white: Josephine is coded 02, harlequin. SO A TWO-LINE CROSS AND AN ORDINARY EXPLANATION STAND SIDE BY SIDE HERE, exactly as they do everywhere else in this register, and only a genotype on the two lines would separate them. JOSEPHINE IS WHITE, BLUE EYED AND DEAF, OUT OF A CROSS BETWEEN TWO DETERMINANTS, AND SO WAS HER SISTER. THE 02 ON HER CERTIFICATE IS NOT EVIDENCE AGAINST THAT AND SHOULD NOT BE READ AS IT. A registrar looking at a white kitten reaches for the nearest white-spotting figure, which is what 02 is; but a harlequin carries patches of colour on the head and tail AND SHE HAS NONE. Neither parent is white and neither is deaf: her sire carries 09, little white spots, and her dam carries 09.
